Well here is a new one for you - External USB CD/DVD Drives being detected as mass storage by Windows (Vista in this case). The solution is even stranger.

If you have an external USB CD/DVD drive, in my case a Freecom FX-50, which is being detected by Windows Vista as 'Mass Storage', there is a simple, but strange way to fix the problem. Follow the steps below and you should be burning disks in no time.

With the PC on fully unplug the USB and power from the external drive - make sure the drive has no disk in it before doing so.

Wait 10-15 seconds.

Plug the USB back into the PC.

Plug the power back in.

Sit back and Windows should now detect the drive correctly.

Sounds strange, but seems to work.

Thanks to 'jaxmatt' at Club CDFreaks for his post on this issue with another drive.
[Opens in new window]

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://www.virusuk.co.uk/2009/04/technology-external-usb-cddvd-drive.html' title='Technology - Windows Vista Fix (Repost)

As time marches forward, so do the operating systems critical applications rely on. I was recently asked to see if I could find a fix for Omnis 7 running on Microsoft's Windows Vista. Here is my solution...

There is no denying, Windows Vista is an excellent operating system which has been improved dramatically by Service Pack 1, but it has received a bit of a bad press. One of the main issues for most people was a problem with legacy software. Omnis 7 is one such product. Last certified for Windows XP and subsequently superseded by Omnis Studio it is unlikely there will ever be any further runtime update for Omnis 7 - at least not in general release.

The good news is that if you follow the steps below, you should be able to get Omnis 7 to run happily in Window Vista - and likely the subsequent release of Windows (Windows 7 - codename Vienna/Blackcomb). This fix has only been tested on Windows Vista Home Premium, but I see no reason why it should not work in the other editions.

Prerequisites

Windows Vista (Ultimate/Home Premium/Business) including SP1.

Omnis Installer.

A Login to an administrator account.

Guide

Install Omnis 7.1 following instructions given by .exe.

Install Omnis fonts, to do this, select the font folder, highlight all fonts then right click and select INSTALL.

Restart.

Now open the Omnis installation directory [as below].

Select OMNIS7.exe, right click then select Properties, followed by the tab Compatibility. This has come to the forefront of my work recently as you shall now discover...

Following the advice from HP and the Microsoft update service it was time to update our 2004 HP printer drivers (PCL6) to the latest edition. Given that a new printer had arrived (an HP P3005 no less) it made sense to carry out the changes in one go. New printer installed and new drivers installed. Perfect.

Internet Explorer, Word, Excel no problems, printer fired up and printed away as happy as.....well a happy person I suppose. Meanwhile, Omnis 7 is labouring away setting up new records and getting ready to run a print job. This is where the problems start.

Initially the print jobs start fine and documents begin to appear, then all of a sudden Omnis 7 disappears (sometimes with a critical error) and the print job stops. At first I thought it might have just been a settings issue, so I checked through the printer settings, made some amendments and tried again. Same problem - starts well but ends up crashing, seemly randomly. A check of the Windows error log confirms that the problem is an Omnis one, but provides nothing useful to troubleshoot with.

Interestingly this problem also seems to manifest itself with the standard printer drivers provided with the new HP P3005, by interestingly I mean annoyingly. To date the only fix for the older HP printers (4000 and 4050 series) has been to roll the printer drivers back to a 2004 edition (original CD version), the newer printer however remains a problem as no older drivers exist.

My guess is that Omnis 7 uses its own layer between it and the printer thus causing the error. After testing I also found that both the generic PS and PCL5 drivers suffer the same problem.

Sadly I do not think we will see a direct software fix and I am not sure the good people at HP are likely to be interested in reviewing their driver. In the meantime I'd recommend anyone using Omnis 7 take care to ensure legacy compatibility. I can say for certain that the HP 4000 & 4050 will work - with the old drivers - in Windows XP at least.

I'll update here if I find out any more, in the meantime feel free to post a comment if you know of a solution.
